The Way to the Savior by Jeff and Abbey Land

Here is the book summary:

Amid the hustle and bustle of springtime chores and storefront bunnies, focusing your children on the true meaning of Easter can be a challenge. But this forty-day devotional brings the family together and shows them the way to the Savior instead.

As a follow-up to the successful Christmas title The Way to the Manger, Jeff and Abbey Land now guide families as they explore and celebrate eight aspects of Lent, the season leading up to Easter: Forgiveness, Hope, Trust, Thanksgiving, Love, Commitment, Obedience, and Jesus’ Last Days.

Filled with discussion questions, easy family activities, and prayers, this collection of devotions can become a family keepsake, bringing your family together to celebrate the Easter season and the way to the Savior year after year.

And now, my review:
The Way to the Savior by Jeff and Abbey Land is a wonderful Easter devotional to do with your children.  It is set up to enjoy all the 40 days leading up to Easter.  Each day has a theme, a devotional reading, a cross connection that brings the topic to question how it connects with all that Jesus faced for us, and then it has a Scripture verse page.  All of the pages are full-colored and beautifully done.  I find that the age range on this is for 4-12 years old an that’s pretty accurate.  Twelve might be too old for this one but I also know that it was good reminders for the older ones as well.  It is always good to be challenged by personal questions that take you responding to them to solidify growth in your life.

Here is the book summary:
In Journey to the Cross, you will be guided through forty days of encouragement that will help prepare your heart for Easter during the season of Lent. Through Scripture, short essays, encouraging stories, quotes, reflective questions, and prayers, you will be pushed to set aside the chaos and concerns of everyday life to focus on Christ. Whether you’re a lifelong believer or a new one, any woman looking to find more meaning in the weeks leading to Easter will find it in Journey to the Cross. Featuring (in)courage’s warm, authentic, and encouraging voice, this book focuses not on your phase of life or circumstances, but on your heart, making it a fulfilling read for women of all ages and stages. It also makes a great gift, which God could use in the lives of your friends, daughters, or ministry partners to help them better experience the power and wonder of Easter with more intentionality and depth.

And now, my review:
I really appreciated reading Journey to the Cross by Mary Carver and (in)courage.  This book is a journey to the cross and a great Easter devotional that leads the reader to read a bit of Scripture, followed by some thoughts, and ending with a few challenging questions.  I thought this was put together well.  Something you can do on your own or do it along with your family as you pass the 40 days leading up to Easter.

When God says Go by Elizabeth Laing Thompson

Here is the book summary:
Go.
One small word. . .so much power.
When God says, “Go,” faith says yes, but fear says no.

But Lord, I’m too weak. . .too sinful. . .too afraid. . .

But the truth? . . .

When God says, “Go,” it’s not about you—it’s about Him.
When God says, “Go,” you face a choice: Sit back and stay safe, or swallow hard and step up?
When God says, “Go,” your time has come.

Maybe it’s time to go somewhere new, someplace you've never been. Maybe it’s time to go deeper—in Bible study or relationships. Time to go higher—in prayer or dreams. Time to go and give in new ways, to use God-gifted talents and opportunities. Or time to go and grow, right where you are.

Author Elizabeth Laing Thompson invites you to journal your personal thoughts and feelings alongside scriptural truths and encouragement as you respond to God's call. . .equipping you to face your very own doubts, regrets, and worries—with faith, courage, perspective, and a healthy dose of humor.

When God says, “Go,” it’s time to decide: Will you sit back and stammer, “But Lord. . . ,” or will you stand tall and say, “Here I am. Send me”? God is calling you—are you ready to go?

Features:
·       A beautiful, textured hardcover binding
·       Delightfully designed one-color interior with quality paper
·       Dozens of encouraging, inspiring thoughts from Elizabeth Laing Thompson's popular Christian living title When God Says, "Go"
·       Generous space to record personal thoughts and feelings
·       Thought-provoking reflection questions and journal prompts
·       Scripture selections on every spread

And now, my review:
The hard copy of When God Says Go by Elizabeth Laing Thompson is wonderfully done with a linen texture that makes for a beautiful journal to cherish.  The author has put together Scripture along with some challenge thoughts that drive you one to the next in a series of moving forward in humility.  It challenges the reader to go and be part of the works which He prepared beforehand that we are to walk in.  Being blessed to journal the journey to surrender.  All for His glory.  I found this journal to be beautifully done both outside and inside.

The House at the End of the Moor by Michelle Griep

The House at the End of the Moor by [Michelle Griep]

Here is the book summary:
What Can a London Opera Star and an Escaped Dartmoor Prisoner Have in Common?

Opera star Maggie Lee escapes her opulent lifestyle when threatened by a powerful politician who aims to ruin her life. She runs off to the wilds of the moors to live in anonymity. All that changes the day she discovers a half-dead man near her house. Escaped convict Oliver Ward is on the run to prove his innocence, until he gets hurt and is taken in by Maggie. He discovers some jewels in her possession—the very same jewels that got him convicted. Together they hatch a plan to return the jewels, clearing Oliver’s name and hopefully maintaining Maggie’s anonymity.

And now, my review:
I think The House at the End of the Moor by Michelle Griep is my favorite by this author so far and I have read most of her books.  This one had some great suspense that drew me in and kept me reading.  I just couldn’t put the book down.  Her need to stay unseen was a wonderful theme in this one.  I enjoyed seeing the story ties come to light and it is full of romance.  I recommend this one.

Mercy for Today: A Daily Prayer from Psalm 51 by Jonathan Parnell

Mercy for Today: A Daily Prayer from Psalm 51 by [Jonathan Parnell]

Here is the book summary:
You cannot make it without God’s mercy.

Do we just need God’s grace in dark and shameful moments? Are prayers for mercy only for those times when we really mess up? Jonathan Parnell says we need God’s mercy all the time. In fact, contrary to many church cultures, Parnell shows that asking God for mercy should be as regular as asking God for our daily bread.

There’s no doubt that David was in a terrible predicament when he first prayed the words of Psalm 51. It was a dark and shameful moment in the Bible, and one so dark and shameful it seldom feels relevant to us today. But David’s most desperate prayer is really a prayer for all of us—and not just for our worst moments, but for our every moment. In these pages, you'll discover:
·       how to pray a daily, memorable prayer derived from Psalm 51
·       how to practice daily repentance and soul care
·       how to pursue God and experience his joy in the Christian life
This is God’s mercy, and it’s Mercy for Today.

And now, my review:
I received a hardcover linen textured copy of Mercy for Today by Jonathan Parnell.  What a delight to have this in my hands.  I just love linen hard copy books.  This book is great on the outside, but so yummy on the inside.  The truths that this author shares and pairs with Scripture is very insightful, challenging, and inspiring.  It’s a smaller book of just over 100 pages but don’t let that fool you.  It’s well worth the purchase and reading.  My biggest take-away is that Psalm 51 is not just good sometimes, but for every day life.  Praise God.  I hope to see more from this author in the future.

The Englisch Daughter by Cindy and Erin Woodsmall

Here is the book summary:
A marriage is tested in this Old Order Amish novel of longing for renewed love and a path for forgiveness from the best-selling author of Gathering the Threads.

Old Order Amish wife and mother Jemima has put her marriage and family ahead of herself for years. She's set herself aside. Raising four children, she's followed all the rules and has been patient in looking forward to her time to chase a dream of her own.

But when she finds out that her life savings for pursuing that dream is gone--and her husband, Roy, has been hiding a child with another woman--her entire world is shattered. Will she be able to listen to God and love Roy's child? With so much at stake, how can she and Roy fix their relationship before their lives come crashing down?

The Englisch Daughter by Cindy and Erin Woodsmall is the first book that I have read from these authors although I have seen their names around and have read other Amish author’s works.  With that being said, I believe that after reading this one, I am very interested in reading another one by them.  They kept me engaged in wanting to know what was coming next.  There were multiple stories going on at the same time, but not too many where I couldn’t keep track of them and they all seemed to fit together by some thread in the tapestry of the story.  The thing that hit me most was the importance of moving through forgiveness and not allowing a heart of bitterness to ruin one’s soul.

I received an ARC of this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest review.

90 Days with the God Who Speaks by B&H Editorial Staff

Here is the book summary:
90 Days with the God Who Speaks is a devotional for men and women of all ages. It is your chance to take a chronological, Christ-centered journey through the story line of Scripture. You will encounter God’s plan of redemption in Scripture through the study of Bible narrative, the essential doctrines of the faith, and the call to join in God’s mission locally and around the world. Learn about the importance of God’s communication, and the different ways in which He has chosen to communicate with us. God reveals Himself both through His creation and through His Word. However, we view God's Word with suspicion and doubt, even though it is perfectly true, trustworthy, and authoritative--just like its Author. Because of our response, Jesus became like us to take our place so we could share in His.   How will the gospel of Jesus Christ transform you over the next 90 days?

And now, my review:
As a Silent Retreat Leader, I was drawn to the title on this one.  Leaning into the enjoyable Presence of God and listening to Him speak through His Scripture.   I enjoyed how the authors pulled together Spiritual truths from God’s Word starting from Creation, continuing on with God’s redemption for His people, and concluding with commissioning us to go and tell.  I found that I could read and reflect and read another one.  It was quite enjoyable and I think this is a great book to have as well as to share with others.

Here is the book summary:
Experience New Growth this Easter

In Uncovering the Love of Jesus, Asheritah Ciuciu invites you to reclaim the Lenten season with 40 devotionals that reveal the deep love of Jesus that's exhibited at the cross and tomb. Includes optional family activities to help you celebrate Jesus together.

And now, my review:
Uncovering the Love of Jesus by Asheritah Ciuciu is a 7 week + devotional leading up to Easter.  What a blessing it is to look forward to reading each day as you approach Resurrection Sunday.  She gives great challenges and ideas for family memory making.  Along with that, she also includes a daily prayer and some cross-references. I have really enjoyed this author’s other work and this is right up there with what she has published so far.  I’m praying for more by her.

Sense and Sensibility Guide by Karen Swallow Prior

Here is the book summary:
Sense and Sensibility. Frankenstein. The Scarlet Letter. You’re familiar with these pillars of classic literature. You may even be able to rattle off a few quotes, but do you really know how to read them? Do you know how to read them as a Christian?

Through this beautifully designed series, bestselling author, literature professor, and avid reader Karen Swallow Prior will guide you through a selection of classics. She will not only navigate you through the pitfalls that trap readers today, but show you how to read them in light of the gospel, and to the glory of God.

And now, my review:
You know when you see a book and just fall in love with the look of it.  That’s what happened when I got my hands on this one.  I was pleasantly surprised by the linen cover. The gray coloring was delightful and I couldn’t wait to discover how the author guides in this book.  She adds some understanding here and there and after each volume (there are three of them) she has some reflection questions to direct you in thinking through some thoughts.  Overall, I was very pleased with this one!

The Crow's Call by Wanda E Brunstetter

The Crow's Call: Amish Greehouse Mystery - book 1 by [Wanda E. Brunstetter]

Here is the book summary:
Mysterious Events Plague a Greenhouse in Pennsylvania’s Amish Country

When Vernon King, his son, and son-in-law are involved in a terrible accident, three women are left to cope with their deaths, as they become the sole providers of the family they have left. The women’s only income must come from the family greenhouse, but someone seems to be trying to force them out of business.

Amy King has just lost her father and brother, and her mother needs her to help run the family’s greenhouse. It doesn’t seem fair to ask her to leave a job she loves, when there is still a sister and brother to help. But Sylvia is also grieving for her husband while left to raise three children, and Henry, just out of school, is saddled with all the jobs his father and older brother used to do. As Amy assumes her new role, she also asks Jared Riehl to put their courtship on hold. When things become even more stressful at the greenhouse, will Amy crumble under the pressure?

And now, my review:
In The Crow’s Call by Wanda E Brunstetter we see a story unfold of pain from the loss of a dad and his son in a buggy accident.  The ongoing life without them in the picture made decisions quite hard at times.  Along with all the decisions there comes some problems that they must figure out how they are going to face.  If you enjoy Amish stories that are clean and enjoyable, you’ll like this one.

The Blizzard Bride by Susanne Dietze

Here is the book summary:
A Blizzard Changes Everything

Abigail Bracey arrives in Nebraska in January 1888 to teach school…and to execute a task for the government: to identify a student as the hidden son of a murderous counterfeiter—the man who killed her father.

Agent Dashiell Lassiter doesn’t want his childhood sweetheart Abby on this dangerous job, especially when he learns the counterfeiter is now searching for his son, too, and he’ll destroy anyone in his way. Now Dash must follow Abby to Nebraska to protect her…if she’ll let him within two feet of her. She’s still angry he didn’t fight to marry her six years ago, and he never told her the real reason he left her.

All Dash wants is to protect Abby, but when a horrifying blizzard sweeps over them, can Abby and Dash set aside the pain from their pasts and work together to catch a counterfeiter and protect his son—if they survive the storm?

And now, my review:
The Blizzard Bride by Susanne Dietze is a wonderful story of past love that comes around again.  There is a child who needs protection and the female lead chooses to go in to a town as a teacher to help this child out.  I loved reading how this unfolded right down to the man, Dash, coming around and wanting to protect her as she puts herself in this position.  This book is one of many of the books in the series by Barbour Publishing called The Daughters of the Mayflower.  Each book can be read independently from one other.

Sojourner Truth by Barbour Publishing

Here is the book summary:
They're bold. They're fearless. They're adventurous. They have a faith that can move mountains. They're women of courage.

This series of easy-read biographies celebrates the lives of women who lived lives committed to changing the world for better. What set them apart? The willingness to live courageously for Christ, even in the midst of impossible situations.

In Sojourner Truth, you will meet the tall, powerful former slave and abolitionist whose biblically-based call for equality—for both African Americans and women—secured her a place in American history.

Wherever she appeared, the wise words and electrifying presence of Sojourner Truth brought audiences to their feet. The lengthy shadow cast by her near-six-foot frame and the challenge to injustice issued by her stinging speeches have secured her a place in American history—a place as a woman of courage.

Get inspired by her story, celebrate her legacy, and learn that God can use each of us for mighty things. . .if we have courage.

And now, my review:
My girls and I enjoyed this read during school this year.  It sure paints the picture of slavery which is really hard to read and listen too.  Sojourner Truth was really brave and accomplished much.  Her boldness to give speeches was inspirational to anyone who is called to do something that is not the easiest of tasks to fulfill.  Translating this to the gospel, we are so thankful that the Holy Spirit gives us exactly what we need, when we need it to fulfill the calling that God places on us.  He doesn’t call us to do something that He doesn’t equip us for.

Holy Guacamole by Carrie Stephens

Holy Guacamole: A Glorious Discovery of Your Undeniable Worth by [Carrie Stephens]
Here is the book summary:
Have you ever felt on the edge, alone, down and out,
or maybe wondered what in the world God can do with someone like you?

Sometimes you wake up feeling less than great about your life. Or your relationships. Or your job. Or your whatever.

Sometimes you even feel pushed to the side, put on the shelf, overlooked, and not particularly important to, well, anything.

Sometimes, you feel even less important. . .than a side of rice and beans. (You know, kind of like that stuff served on the side that no one really asked for?)

What if you found out you were something more like tableside guacamole—that fancy kind they wheel up to the table and make right on the spot?

What if you were made on purpose,
for a purpose that can release God’s glorious colors and flavors in the world?

You didn’t arrive here by accident, nor have you been served up as an unwanted side dish. The God of creation has created you, and He isn't waiting for you to become some better version of yourself so He can finally love you. . .or use you. . .or delight in you.

Generously seasoned with humor and empathy, with stories of triumph, failure, heartbreak, and redemption, Holy Guacamole will connect your heart to the unchanging truths of God’s Word and the unfailing power of God’s call to live a life full of His love for you and for the world.

God longs to reveal to you all the ways you are His beautiful, flavorful, colorful creation. Let Him show you all the ways you are Holy Guacamole—His masterpiece, His signature offering to a world in need of His love.

And now, my review:
The idea of this book was intriguing to me to read and see what this author has to say about purpose.  The title seemed catchy and funny to me.  I was expecting to love it but instead I found a book that does not correctly divide the Word of God.  I would not recommend this book.

Super swaps include falafel made with cauliflower and Caesar salad made with a cauliflower-based dressing, even cauliflower nachos, “bacon” bits, tots, and French toast. The recipes are healthful and easily adaptable for any diet without skimping on flavor or satisfaction. By harnessing the power of this anti-inflammatory veggie, readers will reap all the benefits of a plant-based diet without missing out on any of the good stuff.

And now, my review:
Lindsay Grimes Freedman writes up some pretty nice recipes in Cauliflower Power.  From every meal time, including deserts, to all sorts of creative ideas like making slices into cauliflower steak.  We can’t knock it until we try it.  So, for all those who are looking for ways to change it up and insert cauliflower into their cooking, this book brings loads of inspiration.
I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest review.
