The Water Keeper by Charles Martin

Here is the book summary:

A riveting new story of heroism, heartache, and the power of love to heal all wounds.

Murphy Shepherd is a man with many secrets. He lives alone on an island, tending the grounds of a church with no parishioners, and he’s dedicated his life to rescuing those in peril. But as he mourns the loss of his mentor and friend, Murph himself may be more lost than he realizes.

When he pulls a beautiful woman named Summer out of Florida’s Intracoastal Waterway, Murph’s mission to lay his mentor to rest at the end of the world takes a dangerous turn. Drawn to Summer, and desperate to find her missing daughter, Murph is pulled deeper and deeper into the dark and dangerous world of modern-day slavery.

With help from some unexpected new friends, including a faithful Labrador he plucks from the ocean and an ex-convict named Clay, Murph must race against the clock to locate the girl before he is consumed by the secrets of his past—and the ghosts who tried to bury them.

With Charles Martin’s trademark lyricism and poignant prose, The Water Keeper is at once a tender love story and a heartrending search for freedom.

“I’m telling you, it’s an action-packed, classic Charles Martin romance novel unlike anything I’ve ever read. And remember . . . the day you pick up this book is the day you become temporarily unavailable to the world.” —Charlie Martin, son of Charles Martin

“Charles Martin fans rejoice, because he’s done it again . . . a multilayered story woven together with grace and redemption, and packed tight with tension and achingly real characters.” —Lauren Denton, USA TODAY bestselling author of The Hideaway

“In The Water Keeper Charles Martin crafts a compelling story with skill and sensitivity. Open the pages of this book and you’ll enter the world of characters caught up in a real-life drama that grips the heart. As with all of Charles’s books you never finish it—you continue to live there in your own imagination. Current fans won’t be disappointed; new readers will understand why Charles Martin is on the short list of contemporary authors I recommend above all others.” —Robert Whitlow, bestselling author

 And now, my review:

I found The Waterkeeper by Charles Martin to be a book that I didn’t really like.  I was really disappointed that I couldn’t get into this one.  I found it to be sappy.  I didn’t even make it past the first chapter.  It seems to be written more for a female reader than a male reader.  But it wouldn’t appeal to a woman either because it’s gory.  It was trying to appeal to man’s adventure side but it missed the mark by drawing out the sentimentality of the characters.  An example of this is taking 15 paragraphs for a man to die.  The character had a bottle of wine in the middle of nowhere with a cracker that he had to take before he died.  I found this ridiculous.

Unveiling the Past by Kim Vogel Sawyer

Here is the book summary:

Mysteries, family secrets, and the love of a true Father are found at the heart of this gripping novel from the bestselling author of Bringing Maggie Home

Newlyweds Sean Eagle and Meghan DeFord are no strangers to pain and loss. As cold-case detectives, they know intimately the anguish family members endure after the murder or disappearance of a loved one. But when a new case hits too close to home, it threatens to pull loose the fragile cords of their young marriage.

Sheila Menke was just a girl when her father left for work and never returned. An investigation revealed he had embezzled enough to start a new life elsewhere, but Sheila could never accept the court’s criminalization of her father. Meghan reluctantly takes the case, secretly fearing it will stir up buried feelings about her own biological father. And while Sean investigates the mysterious death of two young brothers, he longs to start a family. But Meghan worries that with a negligent mother and an absentee father as her parenting examples, she might never be fit for motherhood.

As they delve deeper into the past, both Meghan and Sheila must choose to either stumble along the road of bitterness and resentment or walk the difficult path toward forgiveness and healing. When the cases begin to break wide open, these young women are poised to discover that while earthly fathers may fail, there is one in heaven who is a father to the fatherless.

And now, my review:

I found Unveiling the Past by Kim Vogel Sawyer to be a favorable read.  The author let’s us into the characters lives as we watch how they work together on investigation cases and come into new ones.  Sometimes, based on their life experiences, there can be tension with this.  There’s also a story line of wanting to extend their family.  They have quite a few things to work through.  That sure kept me reading through this one.

Vying for the Viscount by Kristi Ann Hunter

Here is the book summary:

For Hudson, the newly titled Viscount Stildon, moving to England from India where he was born and raised was already an arduous enough endeavor. When he learns the fate of the racing empire he inherited along with his title depends upon him getting in the good graces of another stable owner, he's even more at a loss.

The stable at the neighboring estate has been Miss Bianca Snowley's refuge for years, and when a strange man appears to be stealing the horses, she jumps to their protection without a second thought. Upon learning Hudson is actually the new owner, she can't help but be intrigued by the area's newest eligible bachelor.

Any thought of romance is quickly set aside, however, when Hudson proposes they work together to secure suitable spouses for each other. As their friendship grows, Hudson and Bianca begin to reconsider what they truly want in life. But will societal expectations and the weight of their responsibilities keep them from pursuing their true desires?

And now, my review:

Vying for the Viscount by Kristi Ann Hunter had me hooked from the start.  The Viscount is arriving at his inherited estate to see the condition and make arrangements to keep it going strong.  I was laughing out loud when he comes upon the interaction of the woman thinking that he’s broken into the stable to steal a horse.  SO funny!  And so, the story unfolds from there.  There’s a wonderful twisting of a charming plot to this one.

And now, my review:

The Blacksmith Brides includes 4 wonderful historical fiction stories in one.  I didn’t make it through Forging Forever because I found the main plot too disturbing.  This has nothing against the author and I’m sure other will love it.  I found Worth Fighting For a non-stop read of drama and romance.  I found A Tempered Heart to be a wonderful read set in a wonderful time period.  And for Malleable Heart what a great premise for another charming story.  Overall, I enjoyed this book.

A Life Once Dreamed by Rachel Fordham

Here is the book summary:

Six years ago, a shocking secret sent Agnes Pratt running in search of a new start. She found it in Penance, a rugged town of miners and lumberjacks in the Dakota Territory, where she became Miss Aggie, respected schoolteacher and confirmed old maid. But the past has a way of catching up with people.

When childhood friend and former sweetheart James Harris accepts a position as the town doctor, Aggie's pleasantly predictable days suddenly become anything but. James wants to know why Agnes left behind the life they had dreamed of creating for themselves--but he is the one person who can never know.

In the shadows of the Black Hills, can a healing light be shed on the past? Or will the secret Agnes can't seem to outrun destroy her chance at happiness?

Fan-favorite Rachel Fordham brings to life the dusty streets of an 1880s frontier town in this story that affirms where you come from matters far less than where you're going.

And now, my review:

A Life Once Dreamed by Rachel Fordham was a lovely read of romance.  A woman traveled far away from all she knew to set about life on her own with a new set of people in her life.  What she left behind eventually caught up to her.  I found this to be so drawing that I had it finished quite quickly and enjoyed the journey with these characters.  Well-drawn up and intrigue to the last page.

Eye of the Storm by Ryan Stevenson

Here is the book summary:

How an unexpected lightning storm changed everything

Ryan Stevenson’s Dove Award-winning breakout hit “Eye of the Storm” was an overnight success, but his path to releasing that song was decades in the making. Ryan always knew he was called to be a musician, yet it took years of career changes, failed label contracts, and leaps of faith for him to achieve his dream.

In his debut book Eye of the Storm, Ryan shares his zig-zagging journey from farm boy to singer and songwriter, and the life events along the way that have shaped his relationship with God. From his insecurity with self-image, to his grief and fear during his mother’s lengthy battle with cancer, to his high-stress days working as a paramedic, Ryan describes the many ways his faith was tested—and how each trial helped him become more reliant on Christ.

Eye of the Storm will inspire, encourage, and challenge you to trust more deeply in God, confident that any struggle you face in life will help mold you into the person He wants you to become.

And now, my review:

I found Eye of the Storm by Ryan Stevenson to be raw and vulnerable.  This author shares some really hard things with the reader and I found that to be quite the blessing to be let into so many aching places. He shares delays, twists, turns, and compound situations galore.   As a person that is not in the medical field, I found some of the information/reading to be quite appalling and hard to read.  God bless those in the medical field, as He has made them for that purpose and work.  May they receive His strength daily to carry on.

If I Were You by Lynn Austin

Here is the book summary:

“A stunning historical saga of hardship and desire in wartime. . . . Readers won’t be able to turn the pages fast enough [in this] . . . unique take on the traditional World War 2 tale.” Library Journal

From bestselling and eight-time Christy Award–winning author Lynn Austin comes a remarkable novel of sisterhood, self-discovery, and romance set against the backdrop of WW2.

1950. In the wake of the war, Audrey Clarkson leaves her manor house in England for a fresh start in America with her young son. As a widowed war bride, Audrey needs the support of her American in-laws, whom she has never met. But she arrives to find that her longtime friend Eve Dawson has been impersonating her for the past four years. Unraveling this deception will force Audrey and Eve’s secretsand the complicated history of their friendshipto the surface.

1940. Eve and Audrey have been as different as two friends can be since the day they met at Wellingford Hall, where Eve’s mother served as a lady’s maid for Audrey’s mother. As young women, those differences become a polarizing force . . . until a greater threatNazi invasionreunites them. With London facing relentless bombardment, Audrey and Eve join the fight as ambulance drivers, battling constant danger together. An American stationed in England brings dreams of a brighter future for Audrey, and the collapse of the class system gives Eve hope for a future with Audrey’s brother. But in the wake of devastating loss, both women must make life-altering decisions that will set in motion a web of lies and push them both to the breaking point long after the last bomb has fallen.

This sweeping story transports readers to one of the most challenging eras of history to explore the deep, abiding power of faith and friendship to overcome more than we ever thought possible.

And now, my review:

In the historical war-based fiction of If I Were You by Lynn Austin there is found war, love, loss, and forgiveness.  Lynn pens another story that intertwines some interesting character plots and story lines.  I would say that if you haven’t read her work, you should and if you have read her work, this one will not disappoint a Lynn Austin reader.  My favorite part of this story is the weaving of the restoration that was needed.  Beautifully done.

The Grumbler's Guide to Giving Thanks by Dustin Crowe

Here is the book summary:

Trade Grumbling for Gratitude—Experience God like Never Before

The apostle Paul instructed the Philippians to be anxious in nothing and thankful in everything. And when he said everything—he meant everything. We can all agree that this is easier said than done. Disappointments and discontent may cause you to slip into dissatisfaction, and grumbling becomes a state of mind—gratitude seems impossible to find. However, what if this is the precise reason you lack the joy of a God-filled life? Instead of a reaction to when things are going well, what if gratitude is actually necessary to knowing the hope of our gracious God?

This is exactly what Pastor Dustin Crowe identifies in The Grumbler’s Guide to Giving Thanks. Dustin examines the biblical foundations of thankfulness and traces how it can reshape every-day Christian living. When we express gratitude in all things, we not only praise our Creator, we also get to know Him better. With The Grumbler’s Guide, you’ll learn how to practice thanksgiving in both simple and extraordinary ways, even when you’re tempted to dwell on the negative. You’ll find your outlook on life realigned to see the hand of God in everything, strengthening your trust in Him. And in doing so, you’ll find greater, more joy-filled reasons to continue expressing thanks to our good and generous God.

And now, my review:

The Grumbler’s Guide to Giving Thanks by Dustin Crowe is in my opinion a must read for all Christ-followers.  I found this book to be easy to read but filled with something that sounds easy but is deeper than first look.  To pause, take a moment, and drink in the complexity of giving thanks.  This author had me pondering the depths of his words.  I know that I will be coming back to this one over the years and it’s a must have for me to keep on my shelf.

Love Like You Mean It by Bob Lepine

Here is the book summary:

Every year, millions of men and women stand before friends and family to pledge their lifelong love to each other. Do they know what they’re getting into?

Unfortunately, many people have a shallow, superficial idea of what marriage is. As a result, many marriages don’t last, and many more married couples are trudging along looking for something more.

Love Like You Mean It gives husbands and wives a biblical understanding of what real love looks like in marriage by unpacking the ten attributes of genuine love listed in 1 Corinthians 13. Bob Lepine, marriage and family expert and host of the nationally syndicated radio program FamilyLife Today, helps husbands and wives discover that it’s not primarily emotions that define marital love, but actions and decisions that fuel emotions and cause marital love to grow.

Every person who is married, would like to be married one day, or wants to understand more about the biblical vision of marriage will find what they’re looking for as they dive deep into Love Like You Mean It.

And now, my review:

My husband and I were so encouraged by the well-put-together read of Love Like You Mean It by Bob Lepine.  First off, the lay out is so on point.  It walks you through the Scripture of 1 Corinthians 13.  If you know 1 Corinthians 13, you know what’s coming and sometimes you even cringe knowing what is coming because you know it’s going to hit close to home.  We also found that this goes beyond marriage to other relationships and situations as well.  It’s a read that is simple and will have you talking and communicating with each other.  I highly recommend this marriage/life read.

I found The Prayer Map Devotional by Donna Maltese to be just what I was looking for.  It’s informative and yet full of space for you to experience times of prayer with God.  It started me out with a great lesson on the Who, What, Where, When, Why of prayer.  That one just really was special to me because of the Inductive approach carrying over to prayer.  (I’m an addict of Inductive Bible Study as student and teacher, so this just screamed loudly at me.)  That as just the beginning and it just built from there.  I loved the set up and the packed devotions that were small but boundless.  Yes, to this one!

The Light of His Presence by Anne Graham Lotz

Here is the book summary:

The beloved Bible teacher and daughter of Billy Graham shares a rich treasury of her personal prayers to guide you into deeper, more intimate daily conversations with God.

Why is it that as soon as we bow our heads to pray, we start thinking of other things we need to do? How do we make time to pray in the middle of our busy lives? And how do we know what to say and how to say it?

Like many of us, Anne Graham Lotz has struggled with prayer. Over the years, she discovered that writing out her prayers draws her into deeper, more intimate conversations with God. The Light of His Presence offers forty of these tender, honest prayers for real-life situations as an invitation to deepen your own prayer life through worship, confession, thanksgiving, and intercession. You’ll be encouraged to lean more fully into God’s promises through this power-packed devotional resource, which includes inspiring quotes from Christians throughout the ages and also has space to journal your own words to God.

As Anne writes, “My prayer for you . . . is that God will use my struggle with prayer to help you overcome yours. And that, as a result, you will be drawn nearer to the heart of God.”

And now, my review:

I found The Light of His Presence by Anne Graham Lotz to be an amazing resource for prayer in my life.  I’m so blessed to have this book in my hands and I find that I flip all over the place in it to pray all sorts of areas all at once.  She really is such a blessing to share her prayers in all sorts of areas with us.  She’s lived what she’s written in these pages and it shows real, raw prayer. So, I turn to the topic I’m wanting to pray about and see how it fits into my personal experience in that moment.  For example, it might be fear and then she prays Scripture through her section on fear.  I will be using this for years to come.  I highly encourage this resource for your prayer time.

Melodies of Christmas Love

Here is the book summary:

The Heart of Christmas - Lynnette Bonner

When Wynn Mason sees police lights at Misty Cove’s one-and-only bar, she goes inside to investigate and is just in time to see her ex-boyfriend punch Ryland Sage in the face. What is the star of her favorite TV show doing in their tiny Pacific Coast town? Since Wynn is the only medical help for miles around, she has to stitch up his face—and also maybe his heart—all while protecting her own heart from the worldly charmer.

Love on a Mission in Millcreek - JoAnn Durgin

Angelia Ford wonders if she’ll ever live down her unfortunate outburst at the end of the Millcreek Elementary Christmas program. Sixteen years later, she’s home to care for her grandfather and prays the town’s citizens have finally forgiven her youthful indiscretion.

Millcreek’s newest resident, Nicholas Sanders, recognizes the beautiful blonde server at the local diner, but it’s clear Angel doesn’t remember him. What better time than the festive holiday season for Nick to reintroduce himself to the girl he’s never forgotten?

The Bells of New Cheltenham - Chautona Havig

When Justine Driscoll decides to enter a short story contest using a Christmas carol as the inspiration, she discovers love in the carols she investigates, in the story an ex-Army guy tells, and in the little tourist town of New Cheltenham.

A Christmas Duet - Annette M. Irby

A breakup steals a cellist’s inspiration. How will she create new compositions for her ensemble’s next album? Perhaps the church’s handsome music director could help. Join Kate Fleming and Zach Tillmon as Christmas music brings them together on Whidbey Island, Washington.

A Night Divine - Dawn Kinzer

One chilly December night, a tragedy connects successful model Camryn Tate and outreach minister Trace Gardner. As they share a common mission serving the homeless on the streets of Seattle, they provide more than food—they offer hope. But as Christmas Eve approaches, secrets have the potential to break Camryn’s heart.

To Hear the Angels Sing - Lesley Ann McDaniel

Being guardian of her niece isn’t as easy as Devlin Welsh might hope. When her niece is invited to be in a church show, the free childcare is hard to pass up. But when Devlin admits to knowing how to sew, she’s enlisted as costume designer. How will she find the time?

One of Jonah Ryan’s favorite parts of his job as worship leader is working on the kids’ Christmas musical. There’s something about the woman who’s volunteering to design costumes this year that gets him thinking. Could there be more to life than music?

Prairie Rose - Sylvia Stewart

For many years, Rose Morris has lived alone with her dog, Rusty. Mitch Foster, a handsome, un-married neighbor, brings her a bright red geranium, and insists on helping with chores. But who should drive into Rose’s farmyard? The scoundrel husband who had deserted her and her teenaged son years before. Later, a pre-teen runaway, found in her barn, adds his troubles to her own, so Rose decides to re-capture the peace and serenity of Christmas.

And now, my review:

A Christmas Duet by Annette M. Irby is one of seven stories in Melodies of Christmas Love.  This story is full of wonderful moments of connection.  It starts on a ferry, which I just love because I personally enjoy riding them when I’m in the PNW.  The author made me feel like I was right there enjoying the ride with them.  She has a way with words and she drew me right in to the story, painting each scene with wonderful word choices.  I really loved the cello centerpiece of this one.  It’s the encompassing pivotal piece of it.  Makes me want to sit down and enjoy a cup of something warm and some cello music.  Tis the season for some great Christmas reading and I was so blessed with this one.  I’m sure I’ll go on to enjoy the others as well.

And now, my review:

To me Choose Joy: A Coloring Book of Gratitude and Wonder is an inspiring adult coloring book.  It has quotes written by other Christians throughout it with about 10 pages of Scripture pages.  The drawings are beautifully done.  Each one stands alone and brings a relaxing feel to it.  I was pulled to this book because of the title and the season in life that I find myself in.  Very fitting for such a time as this.  My favorite quote outside of all the Scripture pages is the one by Kay Arthur.  I just love her.  There is a little snippet on the backside of each page of where the quote, which I really enjoyed reading, came from. I'm looking forward to some color time with this one.

Blowing on Dandelions by Miralee Ferrell

Blowing on Dandelions: Love Blossoms in Oregon Series, Book 1
Here is the book summary:

Do dandelion wishes actually come true?

Katherine Galloway knew this moment of calm wouldn't last, blown away like the dandelion seeds she scattered as a girl. In 1880, three years after her husband's death, she struggles to run an Oregon boardinghouse and raise two girls alone. Things don't get easier when her critical, domineering mother moves in. Katherine must make the situation work, but standing up for herself and her family while honoring her mother isn't easy. And with a daughter entering the teenage years, the pressure on Katherine becomes close to overwhelming.

Then she crosses paths with Micah Jacobs, a widower who could reignite her heart, but she fears a relationship with him might send things over the edge. She must find the strength, wisdom, hope, and faith to remake her life, for everything is about to change.

And now, my review:

I found the audio version of Blowing on Dandelions by Miralee Ferrell to be very romantic.  I liked that they changed the perspectives in that one time I was hearing from the Grandma’s perspective and another time I was hearing from the main character’s perspective.  This was all done with the same reader.  I enjoyed the way that they fixed their pasts and made a great new future.

I received a copy of this audio file from the author in exchange for my honest review.

And now, my review:

I really enjoyed Find Your Weigh by Shelley Bowdoin.  In this book she points out a mind over matter approach that can be so freeing.  It’s about our thought processes and the actions tied to them.  I loved how it motivates the read to success.  It’s very practical and not a never have that food again kind of plan.  It’s not about dieting but freedom in getting down to the things that weigh us down.  I also enjoyed how transparent this author was and how much she shares with her readers.
