May It Be So by Justin McRoberts and Scott Erickson

Here is the book summary:
Combining prayers in two languages--words and images--this contemporary prayer guide will help you spend time in conversation with God.

As people of faith, we all struggle at times to sustain a flourishing prayer life--a loss felt all the more keenly in these times of confusion, political turbulence, and global calamity. This unique book offers a timeless solution for the spiritual and skeptical alike.

Combining story-driven reflections with visual and written prayers, this simple 40-day prayer guide will help you reconnect with God as you rediscover your own ongoing conversation with Him. Using the familiar refrains in the Lord's Prayer as a guide, this groundbreaking resource invites you to reconnect with God creatively and organically.

And now, my review:
This is a book about spending 40 days with the Lord’s prayer.  So, what this author and illustrator did was take most sections of the Lord’s prayer and share their thoughts of application for the section and then have days of small reflections that they found with word and illustrations to bring about reflection time.  This is NOT a Bible Study or a teaching of the Lord’s prayer.  My favorite reflection, although I worded it a bit differently was, “Grant me, once again, assurance of Your presence and love.”  When I first picked up the book, I was feeling like it was really lacking but then as I started at the beginning again and slowed down, I found the little blessings and where they were going with it.  Where I found I differed – I just made notes of my thoughts and Scripture in the margin.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher and have chosen to post a review.

Teach us to Pray by Gordon T. Smith

Teach Us to Pray by [Smith, Gordon T.]

Here is the book summary:
One of the most basic and vital dimensions of the Christian life is the practice of prayer. Frequently our prayers begin with a petition or request, so the content of our prayers is informed by our circumstances. But what if the opposite were true? What if we allowed our prayers to inform our lives? What would our lives be like if prayer altered our living and began to shape the contours and content of our daily experiences? Gordon Smith invites us to learn three movements of prayerthanksgiving, confession, and discernmentin order to be formed and transformed by prayers that seek God's kingdom "on earth as it is in heaven." Whether you are a beginner in the life of prayer or further along, this small book is a resource for deepening your prayer practice.

And now, my review:
This book is based on the prayer that Jesus taught His disciples to pray when they asked Him to teach them.  This author takes each step and walks us through it and explains what it can look like.  He starts us with the step of thanksgiving, confession, and practicing discernment.  He tells us what he thinks it means when we pray “Thy kingdom come” and all the other phrases.  The author tells of the importance of leaning on the Spirit to guide us with this.  There is evidence that he brings out of how we can tell if we are praying in the Spirit.  This author makes reference to the Eucharist, Ignatius Loyola, and Bonhoeffer as well.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

A Layman Looks at the Lord's Prayer by W. Phillip Keller

A Layman Looks at the Lord's Prayer by [Keller, W. Phillip]

Here’s the book summary:
A fresh look at a famous prayer

“There is inherent in this prayer all the strength and compassion of our Father in heaven. There moves through it a beauty and a serenity which no mortal man can fully explain. It reassures our hearts, strengthens our resolve, and leads us into personal contact with God, our Father.”

In this moving book by “an ordinary man and a child of God,” Phillip Keller takes each phrase of the Lord's Prayer one-by-one, unfolding it in wonderful detail and sharing insights he’s gained and experiences he’s enjoyed.

Next to Psalm 23, the Lord’s Prayer is perhaps the most universally beloved passage in Scripture. It has been repeated millions of times by countless individuals for nearly 20 centuries. Yet, in spite of so much use and familiarity it has never lost its luster. A Layman’s Look at the Lord’s Prayer presents that luster in a fresh way to help you rediscover its incredible power.

And now, my review:
I just love W. Phillip Keller books and this is another one I’m really thankful to have the chance to experience.  He writes in such a way that flows, draws you into whatever he is writing about, and paints such a descriptive picture.  This is a great book about the famous Lord’s prayer and he breaks it down by describing what each phrase means.  So he breaks down “Father”, “Heaven” and “Kingdom”, etc.  It’s great to dig into these phrases and all the more praise His name!  To see what He wants us to see in teaching the disciples and us this prayer and how to pray.  If you’re looking to do this, check this book out!  I’m sure you will not be disappointed.
